Alleviation of Poverty

Despite rapid economic developments in China during recent years, people in rural areas are still living in dire poverty due to lack of resources. According to World Vision Hong Kong, rural population living in extreme poverty has surged to about 30 million. Their daily income per capita is RMB1.7 only. 85 million people are illiterate with one out of every 15 persons unable to read or write. Though China provides free primary education, many rural children drop out from school since they cannot afford the hundred-dollar stationary cost per year.

Besides, nearly 14 million handicapped people are trapped in poverty because of the unaffordable medical cost and the lack of rehabilitation services. Although rural population accounts for 60% of the whole nation, they have only 20% share of the nation's medical resources. Each rural dweller has just RMB12 per year spent on preventative health measures.

Drought has caused 28 billion kg of crop failure every year. In addition, over 60% of cities face deficient water supplies, which creates hardship to farmers and greatly hinders their economic development.

What can our young people do in making poverty becomes history?
