Accommodation in KARC

 

The Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre (KARC) offers an ideal event venue and accommodation for ige2005. The Centre is situated on 11 hectares on the northern slopes of Kwun Yam Shan near Shek Kong at an altitude of 300-400 metres and is about half-way between Fanling and Yuen Long. It was opened by the the Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Edward Youde, Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), on 7 June 1986. A further extension was completed in 1988 and opened by Lady Youde. The Centre is used not only by students from HKU and other tertiary institutions or secondary schools in Hong Kong, but also by students from overseas and various non-academic groups.

The Centre provides accommodation for some 120 persons. There are 16 six-bed dormitories, and 6 twin bed-sitting rooms with bathroom en suite. In addition there 2 four-bed apartments both with sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom. All of the rooms including dormitories are fully air-conditioned.

The Centre are also well-epuipped for the activities held in ige2005. There is a teaching classroom for 50 students. The Horace Kadoorie Hall, seating 120 persons, is equipped with all audio-visual facilities so that it is suitable for all the workshops throughout the ige2005.

KARC is sandwiched between Tai Mo Shan Country Park and Lam Tsuen Country Park. Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden, its next door neighbour, has provided much lead in introducing modern agricultural practices and import of superior breeds of farm animals to Hong Kong. The Tai Lung Government Experimental Station is engaged in various aspects of research in vegetable gardening and fruit tree plantation and is 9 km to the north. The 3 walled villages at Kam Tin, built to defend the village folk against pirates in the Ming Dynasty (16th century), is only 5 km away. Luen Wo Market in Fanling is a typical Chinese village market and serves as meeting point for local busincess and trades people living in the New Territories. The Mai Po Nature Reserve, famout for its migratory birds which descent on the food-rich marshes to feed and recuperate during their annual migratory journey, is about 15 km to the northwest.
